Never saw it coming…..or did we

College of Charleston upsets 9 th ranked UNC

Every dog has its day….

Every team has an off night….

Every now and then some teams get overlooked…

Things you might hear said when College of Charleston beats the 9 th ranked Carolina Tar Heels in basketball.

There are some things that we would all say that we didn’t expect and for me seeing the North Carolina men’s basketball team get out played by the College of Charleston is one of them. Now remember these are the same Carolina Tar Heels that are fresh off winning the national championship just last year. These are the same Heels that had high expectations coming into this season, but I think that we have over looked many things. First, the presence of a sure fire leader, a floor general, on the court as we all know Marcus Ginyard is the most experienced player on the floor but is he the one to take control and lead this team? Only time will tell, last year look at what they had in the way of leadership, Hansbrough for intensity and Lawson for composure it is a lot different this year. Of course they have the same great mind leading them on the side lines in Coach Roy Williams, but you have to have a general on the floor and one would ask do they have that this season. Next, where is the intensity down low in the post, last season you knew that every game Hansbrough was going to bring his A game, this season the Heels lack that intensity. Finally, where is the big play ability, who is the go to guy on this team these are all questions that must be answered before the start of ACC play.

This season the Heels are a good basketball team but they are not an elite team like in years past. They are a team that can hang with you but they may not be the team that can blow you out. This is a team that must find its identity and find it quick. We know that Ed Davis can be a monster down low in the post but his passion and drive must be shown on the court. Deon Thompson can be a force but it must be on a consistent basis, and Larry Drew II is a good point guard but there has to be better decision making on his part in close games. This year Carolina will take their bumps and bruises but they will become a stronger team in the end. I believe they will grow from their losses and will shine come tournament time in March. Now I am not saying they will repeat as Champions but I do think they will give it a good run like every Roy Williams coached team does and has done for many years. You can’t bring back Lawson, Hansbrough, and Ellington but you can work with what you have and I believe that Coach Williams, by season’s end, will find a way to make it work.
