Ahhh…..just the sound of the word “gameday” rolling off the tongue evokes images of autumn Saturdays full of football pageantry, crisper air, tailgating, marching bands, and coeds in the South escorting their dates to the game with a cup full of a liquid mixer that helps ease the pain of a loss or helps celebrate a win.

American flags are removed from the front of houses and replaced by flags from the homeowners alma maters. Sometimes you see split households with two different flags-a Gator and a Nole, a Yellow Jacket and a Dawg, or even a War Eagle and Big Al. Tension rises that one day out of the year when these schools put on their helmets and literally go to war. Marriages suffer when blowouts occur. Smack talk from a spouse and cohabitation with an archrival isn’t easy to take.

It’s that time of year where millions of people awaken with memories of their college experience and combine that with the hopes and dreams for a successful football season ahead.

Two days before the Seminoles line up against the Hurricanes, it’s hard not to reminisce and remember the games from the 80s and 90s when shaking hands before the game at the 50 yard line usually provoked fights, trash talking and Hurricane players stomping on the Seminole head in signs of disrespect.

While tension levels have lessened over the last decade as FSU and Florida State’s talent has leveled off, it remains a game that will feature bone jarring Marvin Jones type hits, Sean Taylor exceptional individual performances and wide-right heart breaking scenarios to close the game.

This should be the best Florida State team since the 10 win 2003 team. Plenty of starters return on offense and defense. Randy Shannon is trying to turn the Canes around in South Florida. While young, they are loaded with athletic talent.

So tune in on Labor Day night at 8pm and watch a great rivalry game. And if you’re cohabiting with the opposition, buy another TV this weekend and set it up in another room.
