Virginia Tech vs Davidson Baseball RecapDavidson 14, (16) Virginia Tech 10
The Davidson Wildcats sported an 18-26 record entering Tuesday’s affair with the Virginia Tech Hokies, but after a five-run first inning and a seven-run seventh, the Wildcats returned home victorious. The Hokies started Patrick Scoggin, who was appearing for just his eighth time on the season. The young freshman out of Richmond, Virginia, was shellacked in his 1 1/3 innings of work, surrendering six hits and seven earned runs. The Wildcats' starter, Brian Russell, didn’t fare much better - he gave up five earned runs in his five innings on the mound. The Wildcats jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top half of the first inning thanks to a leadoff double, which was followed by four consecutive singles. It wasn't until the sixth batter of the inning, Will General, that an out was recorded. The Hokies finally retired the side and headed to the bottom half of the inning with a lot of ground to make up. Tech managed to score two in the bottom of the first thanks to a Ronnie Shaban double, which scored Steve Domecus from second and Austin Wates from first base. However, that brief comeback didn't amount to very much. The visitors from the Southern Conference just kept pouring on the pressure at the plate.

After scoring five in the first, Davidson countered with another set of runs in the second thanks to a Sam Payne RBI single and an Andrew Barna RBI double. Virginia Tech matched with a deuce of its own in the bottom half of the second when Brent Zimmerman blasted his first home run of the year over the outfield fence, shrinking the DU lead to 7-4. The Hokies would eventually rally to take an 8-7 lead thanks to a Michael Seaborn RBI double in the fifth inning and a Domecus three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth. However, the Wildcats proved to be too much. They put the game out of reach with a masterful seven-run seventh inning. Barna crashed a three-run round-tripper of his own to finish off his 4-for-5, five-RBI performance. After a two-run single by Coleman Barron extended the advantage for Davidson, Michael Zeblo blasted the Wildcats' second and final homer on the evening, giving them a commanding 14-8 lead. Tech scored two more in the bottom of the seventh on a Tim Smalling solo homer and a Matt Blow RBI double, but the comeback fell short as the Wildcats conquered the Hokies by four runs.
