Boston College Eagles @ NC State Wolfpack Football Recap

North Carolina State 44, Boston College 17

This game was expected to be a blowout, and the fans who attended Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday afternoon were not disappointed.

Partisans of the North Carolina State Wolfpack wanted to vent their frustrations and see a bloodletting this past weekend. One week after their Wolfpack coughed away a 17-point lead and lost to Virginia Tech, NC State fans craved a thumping of a very weak bunch of Eagles from Boston College. The boys from BC offered very little in the way of quality quarterbacking or potent offense, so with NCSU still smarting from the Virginia Tech setback, the Pack was hoping to run wild against the visitors from New England.

Everyone wearing red - the NC State color of choice - walked home satisfied in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Simply put, North Carolina State dominated every phase of the game. Coach Tom O'Brien's team made Boston College look utterly incompetent.  If there were any questions about Boston College being a darkhorse division candidate in the ACC Atlantic, they have been answered. Coach Frank Spaziani's club is now 0-2 with a suddenly-surging Florida State team on the schedule next week.

NC State quarterback Russell Wilson opened the game with a field-goal drive. The dynamic playmaking quarterback was 9-of-11 passing on the drive, which set a distinctly positive tone for the rest of the proceedings in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. The party was just getting started, however, for the home folks.

After State's defense forced a three-and-out, Dontae Johnson blocked a BC punt and D.J. Green recovered it in the end zone to quickly make the score 10-0 in favor of the Wolfpack.

BC did manage a first down on its next possession, but following that lonely and not-very-significant first down, Eagle quarterback Dave Shinskie - whom many people felt should not have started this game for the visitors (Mike Marscovetra was the man who should have started this game for BC in the eyes of many observers) - uncorked three straight incomplete passes, forcing a punt.  That series of misfires typified not just this game, but BC's entire season on the offensive side of the ball.

The Wolfpack didn't care about the Eagles' miseries. NC State began its next drive at its own 24, and Wilson led them 76 yards in only seven plays, the longest one being a pass to George Bryan for 37 yards.  Wilson completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Owen Spencer to make the score 17-3. By the time the two teams filed to the locker room at halftime, State owned a comfortable 27-10 lead thanks to a 44-yard field goal by kicker Josh Czajkowski. When Shinskie then threw a pick-six to NC State's C.J. Wilson in the third quarter, the Packed had amassed a 34-10 lead, and it was all over but the shouting in a matchup between O'Brien's current team and the school he formerly coached to a series of bowl victories.

Wilson again showed why he may be the best quarterback in the ACC, going 38-of-51 for 328 yards, and three touchdowns. He did throw two picks, but with BC's offense unable to do much of anything, it didn't matter.

One senses that Boston College will have more days like this before the 2010 season comes to an end. As for North Carolina State, the bad taste of the Virginia Tech loss was expunged with accordingly appropriate authoritativeness.
