Florida State Seminoles vs Boston College Eagles Football Recap

The theme of Florida State football over the past decade has been "inconsistency". The Noles pulled out big wins, but turned around and lost seemingly easy games. The dominance of the 1999 national champion Noles was lost and fans have learned to expect let-down games. That was almost the case this year.

Turning around after their impressive 45–17 win over then-No. 13 Miami, the Noles faced unranked Boston College (2–3) which had struggled early in the season and was sitting near the bottom of the ACC.

Florida State entered the game knowing it needed just one more win before resting during the bye week. Boston College entered the game knowing it had beaten FSU the past two seasons and had been a tough conference opponent for the Noles no matter the Eagles' record.

On the first play of the game, Boston College running back Montel Harris ran 72 yards before being tackled by FSU's Greg Reid, setting up an easy field goal to give the Eagles a quick 3–0 lead.
Florida State followed with a three-and-out thanks to two incomplete passes from quarterback Christian Ponder that left many Seminole fans uneasy. BC returned to its rushing attack with a 48-yard rush from Harris three plays into their second possession that set up another Eagle field goal, giving BC a 6–0 lead.

The normally shining points of the Seminole team were struggling early. The rush defense that was giving up only 2 yards per carry had given Harris 120 yards rushing on just two plays. The Noles' running game (ranked 16th in the nation) gained no yards on FSU's first two possessions. Yet despite the setbacks, the Seminole fought through.

FSU adjusted to the strong BC rush defense and running back Jermaine Thomas found a way to break through for a 23-yard run to the two yard line that was capped off two plays later by a Ponder to fullback Lonnie Pryor touchdown pass.

All seemed to be going well for the Noles until Ponder's first pass of the 2nd quarter was intercepted by BC's Donnie Fletcher. The interception did not result in points for BC, but the next two possessions for both teams ended in three-and-outs.

The rest of the game was filled with mistakes. The Seminoles should have pulled away, yet two more Ponder interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and a Ponder fumble allowed Boston College to play FSU close down to the last whistle. Florida State pulled out the tough victory 24–19 and notched another ACC win (4–0) while improving to 6–1 overall.

After the game, coach Jimbo Fisher apologized to his team, blaming his play calling for Ponder's interceptions. He was proud of the team for pulling out a tough victory and took responsibility for the closeness of the game while also pointing out the mistakes of the team.

The Seminoles now rest for a week and a half before traveling to Raleigh, North Carolina, to face the much-improved NC State Wolfpack. Many believe the winner of that game will represent the Atlantic Division in the ACC Championship Game in December. FSU will have to play well against the nation's 7th best passing team if it hopes to keep its conference record perfect.
