Florida State Seminoles vs Florida Gators Football Recap
In Florida State's last regular season game of the year, they faced the rival Florida Gators in Tallahassee with the intentions of breaking the six-game winning streak the Gators have had over the Noles. As the Seminoles honored the football and cheerleading seniors before the game, Coach Jimbo Fisher recognized several seniors including quarterback Christian Ponder. Despite playing through injuries the last few years, Ponder has set many records at Florida State and has become a memorable quarterback in FSU history.
From the beginning of the game, the contest looked to be a close, hard-fought battle as the Noles scored a field goal first followed immediately by a Gator touchdown. At the end of the first quarter, Florida held the slight lead 7-3, but that would be the only time they led (or scored) the rest of the game.
Two minutes into the second quarter, FSU scored to go ahead 10-7. Less than two minutes after that (and after a Gator fumble), the Noles added to their lead with another touchdown. FSU would score one more time before halftime and led at halftime 24-7. The second half was played much like the first—the Seminole defense showed its brilliance by keeping the Gators from scoring. At the end of the game, the Seminoles had defeated the Gators 31-7 and consequently had won the "state title".
Despite the lopsided score, the Gators posted decent stats against the Noles, most notably in the rushing game. UF recorded 212 rushing yards on 47 attempts (a 4.5 yards per rush average). Most of the rushing yards came in the late third and early fourth quarter when FSU began subbing out starters.

What allowed Florida State to open a commanding lead was a consecutive series of Gator possessions at the end of the first quarter and in the second quarter that ended in a fumble, another fumble, and a failed fourth down conversion. FSU scored 14 points off those 3 turnovers. (Florida had a total of four turnovers in the game.)
Overall, Florida State dominated the Gators and never allowed the struggling Florida offense to gain any sort of rhythm. Coach Fisher became the first Seminole coach to defeat Florida in his first season as head coach and has also posted the best record in his first year coaching than any past FSU coach (and Fisher has two more games to play).
Now the Noles prepare for Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship Game this Saturday. Fisher has already improved the team by two wins, beaten both in-state rivals, won the Atlantic Division title, and pulled a top 3 recruiting class (so far). Can he add an ACC championship and a BCS bowl berth to his list of accomplishments?
