Florida State Seminoles @ Miami Hurricanes Football Recap

Florida State 45, Miami 17

In perhaps Florida State's biggest game of the year for several different reasons, the No. 23 Noles had a lot to prove against the No. 13 Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night. Coming into the game, the away team in the rivalry had won four straight meetings, yet the last eight meetings had been decided by fewer than 10 points each game. While last year's game came down to a dropped pass in the end zone, the Seminoles made sure there was no doubt who was going to win this year's game from the very beginning.

A number of top high school recruits were in attendance for Saturday's game. Some were Seminole commitments, others were Miami commitments, but the majority were sitting on the fence between the two schools. In the end, the rivalry, the in-state battle, and the recruiting battle all were dominated by Florida State this past weekend.

The Canes opened the game strongly with a 53-yard drive that ended in a missed field goal from the FSU 32-yard line. Wide left. Canes fans groaned at the thought that a missed field goal in the early going could decide their fate late in the game. Yet the Noles had other plans.

The next drive for each team ended in a three-and-out before the Noles completely took over the game. Florida State running backs rushed for over 50 yards on the next drive which ended in a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Christian Ponder to running back Jermaine Thomas to put the Seminoles ahead, 7–0.

The Seminoles went on to score three more times before the half mercifully ended for the Canes. At halftime the Noles held a commanding 24–7 lead, yet many of the FSU fans in attendance were tentative to celebrate just yet. After all, in the 2008 meeting between the two schools, the Noles led early before Miami fought back to lose by just two points.

As the Noles opened the second half, it took them just five plays to score another touchdown, thanks to rushes of 16 and 44 yards. While Miami did seem to fight back in the third quarter, the Seminole defense's second team still held the Hurricanes to just two more scores in the game.

At the end of the night, the Noles walked away with a 45–17 win and overwhelming bragging rights in the state of Florida for the first time in many years. If the nation wanted Jimbo Fisher's squad to prove itself, the Noles did so on Saturday night. They showed that even though they lost a heartbreaker to Oklahoma early in the year, they were better than the final score in that game indicated.
The Noles now hold a 5–1 record and - just as importantly - their season's fate. They will be favored in every remaining game this season (as long as they keep winning) but will have to fight the urge to slack off. How will the young Noles respond to winning? We'll see come Saturday against conference opponent Boston College.
