Duke Blue Devils vs Boston College Eagles Football Preview
All of a sudden, this looks like a game featuring the last place team from each division in the ACC. That’s expected from Duke, but Boston College is used to going to bowl games every year, not struggling to win a couple conference games. It doesn’t seem that long ago since Jeff Jagodzinski led Boston College as high as number two in the nation with star players like BJ Raji, Matt Ryan, and Mark Herzlich. Boston College won by dominating the line of scrimmage and having solid skill players. The one star skill player on coach Frank Spaziani’s current roster is running back Montel Harris, and he has been injured for the first couple games – he did not show up on the BC two-deep for the Duke game, though Andre Williams has been a solid fill-in, with 34 carries and 173 yards. Chase Rettig has really regressed in his sophomore year, as reflected by his 34-of-67 completion rate, good for just 421 yards with 0 TDs and 3 interceptions in two games. Boston College ’s bright spot is on defense, where linebacker Luke Kuechly will almost certainly lead the ACC in tackles. He’s already the nation’s leading tackler after two weeks with 35 after leading the nation by a wide margin last season, but unfortunately, he doesn’t have much talent around him, save for Kevin Pierre-Louis, who has been a pleasant surprise at linebacker. With that said, the strong linebacking corps can’t bail out the awful BC defensive line and secondary, which were absolutely dominated by Central Florida this past weekend. Weaknesses that were exposed by Northwestern, which beat BC in Chestnut Hill in week one, were shown to be absolute deficiencies by UCF. The Knights’ offensive line blew the Eagles’ front four off the ball all game long, running straight up the gut within the context of a complete mismatch. Fortunately for the Eagles, Duke’s offensive line isn’t even close to the level of UCF’s, so the BC defensive front might have a little more luck containing the Duke rushing game. However, it still bears mentioning that Duke’s passing attack, led by quarterback Sean Renfree, should be able to pick apart the BC secondary to a certain extent. There’s one more saving grace, though, for the Jesuits from Boston College: Duke is still Duke, which is to say that the weaknesses that were so exposed by a tough, physical UCF team probably will not be so easily exploited by a Duke squad that lost to FCS-based Richmond in week one and got blasted by Stanford last week. Renfree, at 42-of-60 for 380 yards, leads what can be a potent offense at times, but that same offense is not close to being consistently good. However, against a weak BC defensive line that doesn’t figure to get much pressure on the quarterback and a similarly limp secondary that is just not very agile, Renfree might be able to find Conner Vernon and his mates in the open field. Vernon is quietly leading a wide receiving corps that many analysts think might be the top group in the ACC. Vernon already has 14 receptions for 176 yards, and Donovan Varner, Brandon Braxton and Cooper Helfet also have provided significant contributions. Juwan Thompson leads the team in rushing with 24 carries for 129 yards. If Duke beats Boston College in Chestnut Hill, it will be full-on panic time for “Coach Spaz” due to two specific reasons. First, the BC fan base seems to be turning on Spaziani. Second, his offensive coordinator, Kevin Rogers, announced a leave of absence this week due to health reasons. With Wake Forest already earning a win over North Carolina State, the Eagles can’t afford a loss to Duke if they hope to gain bowl eligibility – or even avoid the basement of the ACC Atlantic.
