Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs NC State Wolfpack Football Recap

Wake Forest 34, North Carolina State 27

You know that fellow named Russell Wilson? He’s kind of important, isn’t he? A young man playing quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers was greatly missed by his former team, the North Carolina State Wolfpack, this past Saturday in the Carolinas.

Wake Forest was coming off a heartbreaking road loss to Syracuse and showed that it is not to be dismissed as clearly the worst team in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Atlantic Division, which was the case last year.    North Carolina State followed a shaky win over Liberty with a clunker against a division foe, and may be in for a long year without its star QB, Wilson, who transferred to the bright lights of the Big Ten.

Mike Glennon, the younger brother of former Virginia Tech QB Sean Glennon, was solid, going 24 of 41 for 315 yards and 3 TDs to only 1 INT.   However, he wasn’t dynamic, and moreover, NC State needs more balance to help Glennon along. The Pack rushed for only 109 yards on 26 attempts, with Curtis Underwood, Jr. leading the way with 56 yards on 12 carries, while James Washington added 49 yards on 13 carries.

Wide Receiver was thought to be a problem spot for NC State coming into the year, but senior T.J. Graham led an otherwise young and inexperienced squad that appears to be better than advertised, based on its outing against Wake.   Graham had 6 receptions for 117 yards and a score, while junior Tobias Palmer, who joined the team from the JC ranks, had 7 catches for 96 yards and a score.

Wake Forest quarterback Tanner Price seems to have recovered nicely from the minor injury he sustained late in the Syracuse game (not minor enough to keep him out of action in the fourth quarter and overtime, however).   He was 22 of 35 for 297 yards with one touchdown and one pick.   Price spread his throws and gave Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe the ball distribution he wanted. Price primarily shared the wealth with three receivers: Chris Givens  had 6 catches for 111 yards, Danny Dembry had 6 grabs for 96 yards and a TD, and Michael Campanaro had 5 receptions for 93 yards and a TD.   Dembry’s touchdown was actually thrown by Campanaro on a 40-yard trick play.

Sophomore Josh Harris had almost all of the team’s carries from the tailback position, getting 23 rushes for 96 yards and a TD.
